Charles Smith Golden West Washington
Pinot Noir!
Golden West Vineyard sits on the far western edge of Frenchman Hills and the soon to be appointed AVA Royal Slope, located the 47th parallel overlooking the Columbia River. At an elevation of 1600 feet, Golden West has a temperate microclimate moderated by the Columbia River. The vineyard features similar temperatures and latitude as the great Pinot Noir vineyards of Burgundy. Golden West has always been farmed organically, and the soil composition is similar to Burgundy with ancient limestone and fossilized sea creatures mixed with sand and volcanic rock.
The 2018 vintage was incredible! This outstanding vintage began mild followed by a long and dry ripening season in the fall. This enabled us to hang the fruit to reach optimal ripeness without losing acidity or increasing sugars. The wines from 2018 are exceptional in many ways, from the great expression of the whites to the beautiful refinement and complexity of the reds.
Vintage leather, cedar, anise and wild strawberry begin this opus of luxuriously perfumed Pinot. The body is layered with pipe tobacco, morels and pie crust that come across the palate pure and full. Focused as its journeys to a seamless, endless crescendo.
